I have a JD 870, when I go to put it in gear after pressing down on the clutch, the tractor "jerks" forward a little bit. I have tried pressing the clutch down for a while but it still jumps forward when I go to put it in a gear F or R. The dealer isn't sure what is the matter he said it may be a linkage. Has anyone else had this problem? The tractor is still under warranty so JD will "try" to fix it. Thanks for any help!!

jason, Adjust your clutch with 3/4 in. of freeplay or what the manuel quotes. Then press your clutch all the way in and tie it down. Leave it there for 24 hrs. and see if it make a difference. Also make sure it has light viscosity fluid in the trans. ....

jason- your clutch isn't disengaging completely all at once. The clutch disk is too close and the previous post gave you some good advise. This business of "try" to fix is garbage. The linkage needs to be adjusted so there is more clearence at the clutch disk. You could wait for the clutch material to wear down and the clearence to increase, I wouldn't, if I'm doing close work with another human in front of the machine, forget front, I try not to let anyone in front of or behind the machine although, sometimes it is inevitable wherein someone has to work in front with the machine running, then I sure as heck wouldn't want the machine to "jump" or do anything that I wouldn't want it to do. Insist on a fix, not "try". bo ....

I have a 870 and my clutch was doing the same thing. I parked it for about a month on a slight incline with the tractor facing uphill and the tractor in gear. My clutch was frozen today when I tried to use the tractor. I was able to start the tractor and force it into gear. I used it for several hours bushhoging and was not able to get the clutch to break free. I have 770 hrs on the machine. I found my clutch pedal not allowing full travel. It still did not break free yet. I tied down the pedal tonight. Hope it breaks loose. Anyone have any ideas... I allready tried hitting a tree with the clutch depressed... That did not work. ....

I think some JD models have a wet clutch. I don't which the 870 has. Some jump is normal with wet clutches (just like motorcycles). Of course, if it's aggravating or a safety issue, it doesn't make much difference whether the jump is normal or abnormal. I recall a discussion here some months back on the subject, the archives might be checked. There was some mention of oil viscosity and also about parking the tractor on hills. Dry clutches do rust together, which is why clutch pedals are blocked for storage. I'm not sure I've heard of it happening in just a month though. People who have had rusted clutches on tractor where there is access to the bell housing have some success in freeing them. With the pedal depressed as far as possible. A screwdriver inserted between the clutch disk and pressure plate and whacked can free it up. It's also possible for the disk to rust to the flywheel, and I've heard of it happening to both the pressure plate and the flywheel. ....

Following up! I got the clutch to break free by jacking the rear tires off the ground, Adjusting clutch full out and tieing down clutch pedal. Starting the tractor and forcing it into third gear at the same time.
I had to rev tractor up to 2000 RPM and hit brakes several times while tires were spinning to get it to break free.( had seatbelt on and tractor pointed in a safe direction, and was ready if tractor slipped off jacks) I bent clutch pedal out to clear hitting block and readjusted clutch to allow full disconnection when pedal is pressed. This fixed jumping when shifting. I think clutch is worn and in need of replacement. I found complete clutch for 225$ plus 18$ shipping. Is this a good price? ....

There is no need for a new clutch if the present is not slipping. Your problem is a clutch that will release to the rusting up and consequent locking up of the metallic wire strands in the clutch disc linnings to the clutch drive plates. There are two plates and a matching set of drive discs, one for the pto and the other for the tractor. The fix to your problem is simply blocking the pedal down whenever tractor is stored for a while. This is especially true in when storing tractor out doors in areas of high humidity. A loop of rope or a heavy duty slip tie around the loader mount bar will do a good job of holding the pedal down for you here.

lot's of luck,

Warren, messed up on the previous message.
Corrected sentence follows.
Your problem is a clutch that will NOT release DUE to the rusting up and consequent locking up of metallic wire strands in the clutch disc linnings to the clutch disc drive plates.
The words in caps above were left out of the previous post.

sorry,
george
